Oil spill by cyclone "Hamish"

An oil spill polluted the beaches on the east coast of Australia. The cargo ship "Pacific Adventurer" lost during the hurricane "Hamish" up to 100 tons of fuel.

Rain - back to the basics

Es gibt ein kleines Update für Rain. Die beim ersten Besuch der Anwendung erscheinende Aufforderung zur Eingabe einer Stadt wurde entfernt. Statt dessen startet Rain sofort mit dem Loop des Regenradars der letzten 90 Minuten und ausgeblendeter Steuerungsleiste.

Nach dem Start von Rain hat man jetzt also ohne zusätzlichen Tastendruck direkt die gewünschten Regenradardaten im Blick. Natürlich kann weiterhin in der Konfigurationsseite ein eigener Standort eingegeben und gespeichert werden.

Stormy times on Madagascar

Gael was already the second stronger storm in the Indian Ocean in 2009. He fortunately failed the island of Madagascar and disappeared yesterday over the ocean.

Again some short news from EarthWinds. Hurricane "Paloma" has just disappeared from the world map but he left the Caymans with a great damage. Cuba this time better prepared didn't get hit like with "Ike".

EarthWinds speaks French

To better support the French-speaking users of EarthWinds we have converted EarthWinds to support multilingualism with text bundles. EarthWinds now supports German, English and French. The translation into other languages is in progress and will be available soon.

If you also want to see EarthWinds in your language feel free to create a new text bundle and send it to us. We will check it an install it on our server.

Here are some short news from EarthWinds. With the newly added special "Around the World" you now can fly around the Earth.

In addition, we spent EarthWinds a translucent button bar. By tapping the screen you can toggle it.

"Rain" starten, markanten Punkt in der Karte suchen, die Regenwolken drum herum ansehen und dann Entscheiden, ob man mit dem Fahrrad oder doch lieber mit dem Auto fährt. Das ist die übliche Verwendung von "Rain", die gut funktioniert, wenn man z.B. in Berlin oder Hannover wohnt, da diese Ort in der Karte eingezeichnet sind. Da nur wenige Städte in der Karte abbgebildet sind, bleiben alle anderen außen vor.

Damit ist jetzt Schluß. Jeder kann nun seinen gewünschten Ort innerhalb Deutschlands angeben und erhält dann an der Stelle seines Ortes in der Karte einen roten Punkt als Markierung, mit dem die Orientierung zum Kinderspiel wird.

Beim ersten Start von "Rain" kann der Ort gewählt und später auf der Einstellungsseite auch wieder geändert oder gelöscht werden.

Als weitere Neuerung haben wir die Aktionsknopfleiste, in Anlehnung an die Steuerungsleiste im YouTube-Client, als durchscheinende, ausblendbare Leiste etwas schicker gestaltet. Das Antippen des Bildes startet nun nicht mehr den Bildlauf sondern blendet die Leiste ein und aus.

Because of problems of our hosting provider the domain afterworkcoders.de is currently not available. Therefore the use of EarthWinds and Rain is not possible at the moment.

The light is on

The fix last night to correct the incomplete satellite images for EarthWinds unfortunately led to black screens, except America was selected. It looked as if someone turned off the light in the world. Now we have corrected it and the broken images no longer appear in the pictures list.

Neue Detailansicht in Rain

Rain bietet jetzt Detailansichten mit einer vergrößerten Darstellung der Regionen. Damit kann man nun besser einschätzen, ob man gleich nasse Füße bekommt oder nicht. Die Auswahl der Region erfolgt auf der Einstellungsseite.

Zur besseren Orientierung werden in der neuen Version ein paar mehr Städte eingeblendet und die Grenzen und Flüsse über die dargestellten Regenwolken gelegt.

Tip: Wenn es eventuell Probleme mit der Darstellung gibt, löschen Sie bitte den Browser Cache.

Hurricane "Norbert" added

Hurricane "Norbert" left Mexico with a serious damage. He hit previously on the Mexican Pacific coast at the height of the peninsula of Baja California Sur. Would you like to follow his movement, you can do it with Earth Winds. "Norbert" is now available at the configuration page. We put a sequence of hurricanes "Gustav" and "Ike" in EarthWinds. It's madness, how close together the two hurricanes moved through the Caribbean and Americas.

Rain - das Regenradar für's iPhone

Wetterdienste für das iPhone gibt es viele. Oft haben sie eine Fülle an Informationen zu Temperaturen und Vorhersagen, selten aber Regenradarbilder. Ein für das iPhone optimiertes Regenradar sucht man bisher vergeblich.

Rain schließt diese Lücke und bietet Ihnen die aktuellen Regenradarbilder Deutschlands. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Diensten können Sie bei Rain den Niederschlagsverlauf der vergangenen 8 Stunden betrachten. Die Regenradarbilder werden alle 15 Minuten aktualisiert.
(neu) Wählen Sie aus 5 Ansichten (Deutschland, Nordwesten mit SH/HH/HB/NI/NW, Nordosten mit HH/MV/BB/BL/ST/SN/TH, Südwesten mit BW/SL/RP/HE oder Südosten mit BY/TH/SN) Ihre gewünschte Ansicht aus.

Rain wurde mit dem afterworkcoders-Framework für iPhone Web Anwendungen erstellt, mit dem auch die inzwischen beliebteste Apple Web Anwendung in der Kategorie Wetter und von Apple empfohlene "EarthWinds" realisiert wurde.

Die Bedienung von Rain ist denkbar einfach. Mit den Aktionsknöpfen in der Steuerleiste springen Sie in der Bildhistorie zum Anfang, ein Bild zurück, ein Bild vor oder zum aktuellen Bild. Der Wiedergabeknopf startet das automatische Abspielen der Bilder. Auf der Einstellungsseite, die über das "i" erreichbar ist, können Sie die Anzahl der anzuzeigenden Bilder, die Abspielgeschwindigkeit und die Option "Endlosschleife" einstellen.

Until now we have found no free rain radar images for the United States. There are some very good services, but whose conditions do not fit our needs.

If you know a matching service, leave a comment and we try to integrate it asap.

EarthWinds - a closer view

Our first update for EarthWinds is now online at http://earthwinds.afterworkcoders.de.

Beside some small technical fixes we are proud to introduce to you the new category "special". As announced in the app description you can see some selected storms closer. Currently we have the hurricane "Ike" and the super typhoon "Jangmi", but the list will be frequently updated. Although both were very devastating storms, they look so fascinating from the pictures. Very good to see is the eye of the storms.

There are almost 30 images for both storms and the image count feature is ignored.

Try the fascinating image loop.

Hint: If you have trouble downloading the new version, please clear the cache.

EarthWinds is "Staff Pick"

Three days after launching EarthWinds on Apple Web app directory we're surprised about the great interest from people all around the world. Thank you for visiting EarthWinds. Together with the "Staff Pick" Label this is a motivation to us to improve the app and bring some new features with the first update soon.

Because not mentioned yet there are usually 4 images (6 hour interval) per day for every view.

P.S.: When loading the app for the first time there's a white window which disappears when js loading is complete. This is our deactivated debug console for iphone webapps, which we'll remove with the update.

EarthWinds is an iPhone touch web app that shows you the world from above with current images. Pick your view and see how the clouds and sometimes the Hurricanes move.

Usage/Options

EarthView starts in view mode, in which you can navigate through the Satellite Images. Tap play-button to start looping. For sinlge navigation use the buttons: first, previous, next and last. Take a closer look with two fingered zoom and tap on the image to start or stop the loop.

Tap the "i"-button to enter the configuration page.
There you can:

change your language, generally not necessary because EarthWinds recognizes your language settings
choose your view from 5 options: America, Africa, Indian Ocean, Australia or Pacific Ocean
choose your special view, e.g. hurricanes of 2009/2008 or the flight around the current windy world
choose the count of images you want to loop through, generally there are 4 images per day
choose loop speed
choose the kind of descripton from data,counter or both
toogle from single run mode to loop mode.
